Program Dates: May 16 - August 8, 2008 Application Deadline: February 8, 2008 Website: http://nanojapan.rice.edu Rice University hosts a summer program in Japan that we here at NC State highly support. We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 NanoJapan: Summer Nanotechnology Research Program for Undergraduates application cycle. NanoJapan consists of a three-week Japanese language and culture orientation program held in Tokyo followed by a nine-week research internship at leading nanotechnology laboratories throughout Japan. Research host universities include Keio University, RIKEN, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Osaka University, Osaka Institute of Technology, Shinshu University, Tohoku University and Hokkaido University. Participants will also travel to Kyoto for a Mid-Program Meeting including a full-day Origin Japanese Traditional Arts Workshop. NanoJapan concludes with participants returning to Rice University to present scientific research posters on their summer projects at the Rice Quantum Institute Summer Research Symposium. The NanoJapan program is open to freshman and sophomore engineering and science students who are currently enrolled in good academic standing at any US institution of higher education. Applicants must be able to express a demonstrated interest in the field of nanotechnology as it relates to nanoscale semiconductor devices, nanophotonics, and carbon nanotubes. No prior Japanese language experience is required as English is the primary language of all research host labs though applicants should be able to express a demonstrated interest in the study of Japanese language and/or culture. Sixteen students will be selected to participate in the 2008 program and selected participants will pay a $500 program fee. However, due to funding made possible by a National Science Foundation Partnership for International Research and Education (NSF-PIRE) grant all participants will receive a stipend of up to $3,500 to be used towards international airfare and living costs during the research internship period. For more information please see http://nanojapan.rice.edu or email nanojapan@rice.edu.
