Sy Matthews Society
Sy Matthews was a much loved and highly respected teacher and advisor. In memory of
Dr. Matthews we have created the Sy Matthews' Society to recognize those individuals
who make contributions of annual unrestricted support to benefit the Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State.
High-quality students and young talented faculty continue to be the keys to our
Department's future successes. Gifts to the Sy Matthews Society help insure that
we continue to attract the best and brightest students and retain the preeminent
faculty.
The Sy Matthews Society was created to recognize and honor donors who have contributed
to this priority. Gifts to the Sy Matthews Society are not only recognized at the Department
level, but also at the College and University levels as well.
Checks should be made payable to the NC State Engineering Foundation, Inc. with a note
indicating the Sy Matthews Society and mailed to Campus Box 7901, Raleigh, NC 27695.
Endowed Faculty Support
The Department of Electrical and Computer of Engineering at NC State has hired 10 new
faculty members since 2001 due to retirements and new positions in emerging areas.
In 2002, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded four Career Awards to Electrical
and Computer Engineering faculty and approximately $57 million dollars in research activities
were recorded. Attracting and retaining the best faculty is our priority and is critical to
the quality of an NC State Engineering education.

Endowed Student Support
In-state tuition and fees for full-time undergraduates in 2002-2003 totaled almost $4,000.
The out-of-state student rates totaled more than $15,000. As tuition rates continue to rise,
endowed scholarship support becomes more critical to our ability to attract and retain the
best students.
The NC State Engineering Foundation currently manages more than $2,496,000 in endowed scholarship
funds exclusively for students enrolled in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
at NC State. These funds generate about $99,000 annually, which is used to award more than 50
scholarships averaging $2,000 each.
There are currently more than 1,300 undergraduates enrolled in the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering meaning fewer than 3% of students receive endowed scholarship awards. Fewer
than 14% of Electrical and Computer engineering students receive scholarship assistance of any
kind from the College of Engineering. Attracting and retaining the best students is critical to
the quality of our programs.
