Veena Misra has been awarded $300,000 by the National Science Foundation for research on High Density Metal and Semiconductor Nanoparticles for Memory and Photonic Applications.
The award will run from June 1st, 2008 to May 31st, 2011.
Research Abstract - In this proposed work, we will incorporate metal nanoparticles formed at University of Missouri, Columbia in memory and photonics devices in our labs here at North Carolina State University. We have gained fundamental insight of high-K and metal electrodes in CMOS device structures and will bring that knowledge to the field of memory devices.
Specifically, in the proposal, the joint UMC and NCSU teams will explore (i) multilayered embedded nanocrystals for higher charge density, (ii) composite nanocrystals for multiple bit memory, (iii) novel structures including FINFET based memories for higher VT sensitivity and (iv) engineered tunnel barrier dielectrics for asymmetric programming and retention times will also be investigated using novel approaches presented in this proposal.
The experimental work will be supported by simulation and modeling studies (Islam) that will lead to optimized device designs and methodologies. Characterization methods, both electrical and optical, will also be developed to benchmark these memory devices (Biswas). To assist in this task, the PIs have also recruited major semiconductor companies, such as Sematech, Freescale and Micron, as partners to a) obtain latest high-K materials, b) send researchers to these partner institutions for exchange of ideas and c) engage in regular discussions to determine their suitability and impact of technical findings. The PIs are very well suited for this task since together they provide the multi-disciplinary expertise necessary to undertake this venture.
