The Underwater Robotics Club (URC) Dives Head First into the World of Competition

November 10, 2006

URC  learned the importance of having good sponsorship and a  dedicated team of members after the team's first competition in fall 2005. After the competition, the company the team worked with retracted their original robot and the team had to start from scratch. The team members took some time off, brainstormed some new design ideas, and built the new and improved "Seawolf II."

In this years Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International's Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, URC's Seawolf II placed ninth overall. The team's good ranking didn't come without a high level of suspense. According to William Cox, a graduate student in electrical engineering, "The robot had worked perfectly all semester. But the first time we put it in the water it went crazy." Eventually the robot performed up to par landing them ninth place.
