Ultra-efficient Computing Platforms: A Grand Challenge by Dr. Wen-mei W. Hwu Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Date: Monday, October 11 Time: 4:00 PM Place: 2207 Textiles, NCSU Centennial Campus ABSTRACT: Both general purpose and embedded computing platforms are increasingly adopting heterogeneous parallel processing techniques to address power, performance, and price issues. Migrating the mass application base to these platforms is a grand challenge that must be addressed in order to sustain the continued growth of the semiconductor industry. In this talk, I will describe a major cross-university effort at the MARCO/DARPA GSRC focus research center that is positioned to overcome this grand challenge. I will describe the architectural model and the compiler technology that are designed to form the foundation of future ultra-efficient computing platforms and to enable massive migration of application base to these platforms.
