Fellowship Program at a Glance


Program description: Offers three-year graduate research fellowships in science, mathematics, and engineering, including Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science awards.


Disciplines: Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, behavioral and social sciences; engineering; the history of science and the philosophy of science; and for research-based Ph.D. degrees in science education.


Eligibility: Applicants must be United States citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States.  Fellowships are intended for individuals in the early stages of their graduate study.  In most cases, an individual has three opportunities to apply: during the senior year of college, prior to or during the first year of graduate school, and the beginning of the second year of graduate school.


Location(s): Any appropriate, accredited, non-profit United States institution or appropriate international institution of higher education offering advanced degrees in science, mathematics, or engineering.


Duration: New fellowships to be offered in March 2004 will be for maximum tenure periods of three years usable over a five-year period.


Frequency of awards: Annually


Awards made: Approximately 900 new three-year fellowships


Deadline(s): Deadline for entering the competition (dependent on proposed field of study):

November 4, 2003: Life Sciences, Physics and Astronomy
November 5, 2003: Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Geosciences
November 6, 2003: Social Sciences, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Psychology, Chemistry

Benefits:
Currently $27,500 stipend for 12-month tenure plus $10,500 cost-of-education allowance per tenure year. A $1,000 International Research Travel Allowance is also available under conditions specified in the Guidelines for Submission of Applications.
