Bobby Compton is the Director of NC State's Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Design Center. He has 20+ years of industry experience in electronics design, embedded software design and printed circuit board packaging during his careers at GE Energy, GE Healthcare and Eaton Corporation. He has product design experience in: medical diagnostic imaging equipment, medical vitals sensors, industrial controls, motor drives and uninterruptible power supplies. During his career he has worked as a design engineer, systems engineering lead, program manager, Six Sigma quality master blackbelt, global technology center manager, and engineering general manager. He has lead varied corporate research efforts to investigate and model: machine learning algorithms for predictive diagnostics, low noise analog printed circuit board parasitics, GhZ signal communications integrity, large ASIC/FPGA designs, and renewable grid interface solutions. He has also lead cross-functional business initiatives to resolve problems involving marketing, supply chain, and manufacturing.
Bobby has enjoyed working closely with academic colleagues and students throughout his career where he mentored student projects and was an industry campus recruiter at several universities. At NC State, he has been the chair of FREEDM's Industry Advisory Board as well as a thesis committee member for power electronics research with Dr. Subashish Bhattacharya. At Duke University he has been a PhD dissertation committee member for electronics and medical device application research with Dr. Krishnendu Chakrabarty. Bobby is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering where he guides graduate students in Industry Consulting Practicums in the Duke Masters of Engineering Management Program.
Bobby received his BS & MS Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He also obtained an MBA from Duke University where he graduated as a Fuqua Scholar in the top 10% of the class.
